(a side story)

Our story takes place long ago in ancient Japan. It was the time of small villages where warriors trained from youth to protect their honor and fight for a living. It was the time where demons and rogues rampaged across the land. It was the time of the ninja….
Fanatical beliefs had led to the rise of a great cult known as the Black Cleansers. They built a vast empire and a huge army that was thought to be unbeatable. At the head of the movement were four individuals. These four were no mere mortals, they were born with the ability to exert power over the very elements. They were known as the Savants.
Aquarius was the Savant of Water. He was an excellent strategist and even greater at rallying support with his propaganda. He is considered by many the true leader of the Cleansers. He gained support for his group by making the Savants appear as gods. He would bring water to desert villages in exchange for allegiance. Those who declined to join were ravaged with floods and despair.
Geaon was the Savant of Earth. He led the vast army of the Cleansers and was feared by all. His strength was that of ten men and he could bring down avalanches of rocks onto the fortifications of the enemy. He wielded a mighty war hammer which crushed thousands during the long campaign.
Ember was the Savant of Fire. She had a fiery lust for the pain of others. She would infiltrate key political figures by using her beauty to get into a personal situation with her victim. Then she would torture them and engage in her sadistic pleasures. The next day the victims would be find tortured and burned from the inside out.
The final member of the savants was Wind. He was the Savant of Air. He is considered one of the greatest shinobi to have ever lived. He led a special group known as the Darkstalkers. They were all expertly trained ninjas who were used for sabotage, assassinations and stealth work. It is said that wind had read the forbidden scrolls of every ninja village and his speed and ability in combat was invincible. Many thought of him as a demon, especially when ranged weapons would merely move around his body because of his control over the air. His kunai and shuriken attacks could wipe out entire battalions and his sword, the wind runner, could cut through any armor.
It was late in the campaign of the Black Cleansers. They were beginning a march against the allied ninja nations of Japan. Aquarius brought a mission to Wind and his darkstalkers. They were to kill Lord Hokage, a prominent figure among the allies. The mission was supposed to be a simple assassination one. Instead it was an ambush. Aquarius had set Wind up because he feared Wind’s dislike of killing needlessly would show weakness among the Savants. Wind was the only survivor of the failed mission. He then was forced to fight Geaon. Wind’s speed proved too much for the lumbering giant and he tapped into a mystical strength to cut Geaon in half with the wind runner.
With one savant dead and another now against the Cleansers many supporters started to have doubts. Without it’s great general the army was low on morale and easily defeated by the allied ninjas. Aquarius was captured and executed for crimes against all humanity. Ember fled to a new world in the West where she was accused of witchcraft and drowned in a river.
Wind faded away into normality. He bound his power over the air and locked his sword, equipment, and darkstalker clothes in a temple which is hidden and may never be found. He then settled down in a peaceful village and married a beautiful girl he met there. They lived happily and had children. The wife and children never knew what he had been. He even took a false name, Tang Armagetzon.
Over the years the truth and facts of this story have been forgotten. Now the tale of the savants has become merely a legend told to young children in certain areas of Japan. The tale above is not a legend but the reality behind it all. The information used to write this was taken from the diary of the Savant known as Wind. The diary was found in a sealed chamber thirty feet underground, beneath a shintoism shrine deep in the mountains of Japan.
